The longest bridge in India that was built over Brahmaputra is all set to be opened by PM Narendra Modi on May 26th. The Dhola-Sadiya bridge is 9.15 km long and was built in view of improving the connectivity n the region. It is 3.55 km longer than than the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai and is built to withstand the weight of a 60 tonne battle tank.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said “The prime minister will dedicate the strategically important bridge to the nation on May 26. It will bolster road connectivity in the Northeast as the bridge will be used by people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh besides defence forces extensively,” adding further “Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have huge strategic value to the country. Since the bridge is located close to our border with China, it will help quick movement of military troops and artillery in times of conflict”.

The bridge is located 540 km from the capital of Assam and 300 km from the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and was constructed at a cost of Rs.950 crores. The construction began in 2011. The bridge will cut own the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by 4 hours there by saving time and fuel.

The bridge is built in public-private partnership and its opening will commemorate the one year of assuming power by the BJP Government in Assam.
