Swedish carmaker Volvo is all set to launch its flagship sedan, the all-new Volvo S90 in the country. The bookings for the car have begun and it is slated for a launch in the festive season this year.

The car is technology laden and also comes equipped with radar frequency based safety systems, working in tandem with the regular safety features to take the car’s safety a notch higher.

The Volvo S90 and the company’s flagship SUV, the Volvo XC90 come fitted with radar safety features as standard, but owing to the criticality of certain frequencies and the associated safety risks with them, the government did not allow those frequencies for any civilian use.

This however got changed in late 2015, when the government de-licensed some radio frequency bands in the range of 36 -38MHz, 433 – 434.79MHz, 302 – 351 KHz and 76 – 77GHz. The government released these frequency bands in an effort to enhance vehicle safety, by making them useable in these cars.

Volvo S90 comes equipped with safety technologies like cyclist detection, automatic braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot information system and adaptive cruise control.

The company will now be able to offer the benefit of all of these features to its customers of the S90 sedan, right from its day of launch. However, it had deactivated all of these systems in the XC90 through software coding. Volvo will now also look at re-activating those in its new cars as well as the cars of existing customers by flashing a software update.

The radar frequencies used in automotive application were earlier regulated by the Department of Telecommunications of the Government of India. This de-licensing move will definitely increase the use of technology for the better and will also lead to advanced features and technologies making their way into our markets, just like they are utilized globally.
