Studio Symbiosis is an architectural & interior design studio based in Delhi, London and Stuttgart involved in projects of various scales and sectors. As co-founder of Studio Symbiosis Architects, Amit Gupta & Britta Knobel have been involved in projects of various scales and sectors ranging from Hospitality, commercial, residential, mixed use and master plans. While talking to Estrade Amit & Britta shared their design philosophy, their concern for environment and their ultimate goal of creating meaningful architecture
- Team Estrade: What is your design Philosophy?
Amit & Britta: Studio Symbiosis is an architectural & interior design studio based in Delhi, London and Stuttgart involved in projects of various scales and sectors. The design philosophy is to create integrated design solutions imbibing amalgamated, efficient, robust and sustainable designs leading to performative architecture. The research and intent of the practice is to create performance as a design driver, to achieve Sustainable and Smart buildings.
- Team Estrade: How has the new technologies affected an Architect’s thinking process? Have they impacted procedural architecture?
Amit & Britta: Our practice believes that, with computational tools it is possible to create elegant design solutions driven by performance. Performative ecologies can respond to various parameters integrated as design drivers. Simulation and optimization algorithms help in making a coherent and amalgamated design solution.
- Team Estrade: Are you concerned about environmental and social sustainability in your buildings? If so, what role does green building play into your work?
Amit & Britta: Sustainability is a key design driver for our projects. We believe that with performative architecture, information from nature such as; solar heat gain, wind direction, shadow analysis, glare studies, is extracted and instilled in the design solution. This leads reduction in heat gain of the building, thereby reducing its carbon footprint drastically and also creates a comfortable condition for the users.
“It always helps learning from the past to create the present”
- Team Estrade: Can you tell us about any projects you are currently working on that you are especially excited about?
Amit & Britta: There are a number of projects that we are working on at the moment and each project is unique in terms of their concept and relationship to the design parameters. The projects that are very close to us are Double tree by Hilton Ahmedabad, Double Tree by Hilton Kathmandu, Boutique Hotel Rohtak, Punjab Kesari Headquarters, Trans Ganga Masterplan all of which are on site or about to commence construction.
- Team Estrade: What has been your most defining moment so far?
Amit & Britta: We have been fortunate enough to have our work recognized widely and for us the key moment in our practice was being invited to TEDx as a speaker in Germany alongside; in Smart Geometry Hong Kong, AIT congress Hamburg. Further to this the presentation to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi for Athletic Ripples and to Shri. Akhilesh Yadav for Trans Ganga Masterplan and Allahabad Masterplan has been memorable.
- Team Estrade: What is your ultimate goal when it comes to your work? What do you want to be remembered for?
Amit & Britta: Creating meaningful Architecture that looks beyond the notion of only Aesthetics and goes on to synthesize Sustainable, robust and efficient spaces that are in symbiosis.
- Team Estrade: What advice would you give to young designers starting out today?
Amit & Britta: To the designers of the future our advice would be to be sensitive to the surroundings and what the project wants rather than what they want. With computational tools it is now feasible to simulate and analyze data that can help in creating meaningful architecture. Also it always helps from learning from the past to create the present.
